L'Eroica 2015

March 15, 2016

It’s difficult to put pen to paper now, when everything you read about L’Eroica 2015 is almost embarrassing, it’s so good, profound and deeply felt. You admire the style of some writers, the quips of others but they all have one thing in common and that is soul. They are all open to a contagious smile, the common bond that links everyone to this experience which wouldn’t be possible anywhere else.  Here, in Gaiole in Chianti today, it’s like when you took the crib down after Christmas as a child. Winter remains, together with a happiness that already tastes of nostalgia. The party is over, it’s time to go home. And this year, it was better than ever, our community has grown even more, fed from every corner of the world; by now we speak every language but passion and a simple smile are the favoured, universal languages. This time, I got on my bike too. For the nineteenth edition I managed to do what I’ve never done before and, of course, it started to rain. Nothing epic, just a touch of colour added to the picture, a filter for the photos, a trousseau of clouds that barely enriched the whole setting. Water soaking shoes that had never been tried out before, splashes of mud evoking memories of the mountains of the Tours of yore, an applause when the sun showed its face again and an infinite series of scenes, gags, selfies and little gatherings, to put on rain jackets or take them off again, for a puncture, or for a panorama in natural HD.  The many who tested themselves against the long distances, despite the weather, told of a sport with an extraordinary appeal. Cycling and the beautiful fatigue it brings have a bright, young future and all our ‘Eroici’, our heroes are called to build that future. Thanks to each and every one of you for the experiences of last weekend. For me, L’Eroica 2015 was a lifetime achievement award
